Adelanto, San Bernardino County
Adelanto was founded in 1915 by Earl Richardson, the inventor of the Hotpoint electric iron, who sold his patent and bought land in the high desert to create a planned community. The name is Spanish for progress. Early settlers planted pear and apple orchards, and the town incorporated in 1970. It sits at about 2,900 feet on the western side of the Victor Valley.
